THE date to remember folks..

13th May 2009 marks 60 years since the first flight of the English Electric Canberra.

Unfortunately we in the UK will not be blessed with an airworthy Canberra for this historic occasion, so let's all do what we can in the Canberra community to ensure that the type gets the recognition it deserves, and keep the interest alive so that we may see the type aloft in 2010.

A good way to start would be by paying us a visit at Bruntingthorpe on one of the upcoming open events, watching WT333 strut her stuff along the runway and making a small donation to the cause to keep the UK's currently sole fast-taxying Canberra in good health. Details of individual events will be posted here in due course.

Cheers, Timbo

To celebrate the 60th anniversary of the first flight of the English Electric Canberra Bomber the museum is holding a special Canberra weekend on the 16th and 17th May.

The first flight was piloted by Roly Beamont, celebrated WWII Typhoon pilot who was also test pilot on the English Electric Lightning and the TSR2.

The Canberra is well representated at the museum with no less than five Canberra cockpits of different marks, four of which are being specially restored for the weekend.

Many different types of Canberra were manufactured and the final PR9 version has only recently been retired from RAF active service.

The aircraft presented so far are:-

Canberra B2 cockpit, WD935
Canberra T4 cockpit, XH584
Canberra T17 cockpit, WJ565
Canberra T19 cockpit, WJ975
Canberra PR7 cockpit, WT534

The Canberra cockpits will be open throughout the weekend allowing visitors to try out the different crew positions.

The weekend will also display the Avon jet engines used in the Canberra, it's ejector seats and we will also have a presentation of the aircraft's development through the different marks.

We would especially like to welcome anyone who served on Canberra's and anyone involved in their design and manufacture to the weekend

The weekend is the brainchild of museum stalwart Bill Fern.

If you would like to help out at the weekend, or bring along any further exhibits please email jim@aeroventure.org.uk or contact Bill on the main museum phone number.

Latest News as at 28th February 2009:-

Additional cockpits being brought to the museum for the weekend:-

Canberra B(I).6 cockpit, WT319 (belonging to Tony Collins)

Bill is especially interested if anyone can bring along a Canberra PR3, PR7 smiley or PR9 cockpit

Trust me gentlemen, Marcelo (LinceMk62) is a good friend of mine and has tons of superb photos and information on Argentine Canberras. He has also organised a brilliant Facebook site dedicated to Grupo 2 de Bombardeo which operated the B.62 and T.64, which you can see here.

including some very rare photos such as this one:

The Canberra WT333 Team will be marking the 60th Anniversary of the first flight of the Canberra prototype by doing a static engine run on May 13th at Bruntingthorpe.
We hope to have the engines running at 10.46am which will be 60 years to the minute since the first flight.

This is not going to be a organised publc event, infact the only thing on offer is alot of jet noise,a bit of the usual Canberra banter and tea and chocy bics all round.
The event such as it is will not be open to the public ,but any of our Canberra friends and Crazy supporters are welcome to come, just let myself or Timbo know who is coming so as we can clear you on the gatehouse.
Entry is by donation, any money raised will go 100% towards 333s upkeep.
We will be having our 333 supporters stall so you will be able to buy 333 Team items and our 60th Anniversary patch etc.
It should be a good way to spend a wednesday morning smiley
